Ricky Gervais Promises This Year's Golden Globes Will Be His Last and Most Offensive

Maybe Ricky Gervais wasn’t kidding when he tweeted that he has already claimed the Holocaust and pedophilia as Golden Globe monologue material. The polarizing Globes host and comedian has taken to his blog to express his true (R-rated) intent in hosting this year’s ceremony and to declare that he will be making guests even more uncomfortable than they felt last year. Yikes! Gervais explains that hosting the Globes for the “third and definitely final time” was a difficult decision but “what actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those fucking idiots who said that I’d never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is.” Now that we know he isn’t taking the high road, leave it to Gervais to explain which of the lower avenues he plans on taking this January 15. “Now here’s the thing,” Hollywood’s most beloved/hated insulter begins. “The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended but they were. This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified. […] Follow me on Twitter and let me know your favourite targets for the monologue. I’m enjoying it already.” Here you go, Movieliners. Let me know who you’ll be suggesting as monologue targets in the space below. · Week one hundred and ninety-four - November 2011 [RickyGervais.com]

Woody Harrelson is a Psychopath, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Happy Thursday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Remembering new Oscar producer Brian Grazer’s own “gay” controversy… The Criterion Collection comes to iTunes (but not without issues)… Clint Eastwood’s thing for Herman Cain… and more. · Woody Harrelson has joined the cast of Seven Psychopaths, which reunites In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh and star Colin Farrell in the story of a screenwriter (Farrell) seeking inspiration for his next script. When that inspiration arrives in the form of a dognapping caper targeting a psycho gangster (Harrelson), all hell breaks loose. Tom Waits, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken are signed up as well — should be a hoot and a half. [Deadline] · I hate to bring this up so soon after Brian Grazer landed his new Oscar producing gig, but remember that whole flap that came down last year around the trailer for Grazer and Ron Howard’s film The Dilemma? The one where Vince Vaughn’s character called electric cars “gay”? And which Universal pulled from circulation? It’s like dj vu all over again! Except this time you should shoot me in the face, seriously, just make it stop. [LAT] · There’s good news and bad news for fans of the Criterion Collection: The good news is that you can now rent and/or buy a selection of the distributor’s titles on iTunes. Alas, the selection is woefully small (under 50 films!) to start with, and purchases don’t include the special features that arguably make Criterion what it is in the first place. Oh well! Baby steps, etc. [/film] · As foreseen, remake plans for the Toronto Film Festival sensation The Raid have trickled from rightsholder Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group to its affiliated genre kingpins Screen Gems. Gareth Evans, who wrote and directed the Indonesian action spectacle, will executive produce. [Deadline] · “I love Cain’s story,” Clint Eastwood has said of the dark horse GOP presidential contender Herman Cain. “He’s a guy who came from nowhere and did well, obviously against heavy odds. He’s a doer and a straight-talker, which I don’t see enough of from either party.” Doer? Cain hardly knew her! Ahem. [LAT] · Speaking of GOP presidential candidates, RIP Rick Perry. Good luck finding a more cringe-inducing self-destruction. Relive the anguish below, and check out Andrew Sullivan’s terrific debate liveblog for a full recap. [The Daily Beast]

Walsh: Finds his 'Way' into a new career

Kevin WalshGetting thrown out of a car by Scott Rudin on a London highway has its benefits."I don't know what you've heard about Scott, but every story is true," jokes one-time Rudin assistant Kevin Walsh, who characterizes his time spent with the mercurial producer as a tremendous learning opportunity. "But for every story you read about how bad he is, how tough he is, it's never printed how witty he is. He does have a sense of humor. I love him for what he taught me and what he opened up for me."Walsh launched his showbiz career as an assistant to music mogul Tommy Mottola before seguing to the Rudin post."Four assistants got fired ahead of me," recalls the Lafayette College grad of his first days on the job, which included Rudin ripping a fax out of the wall and hurling it across a room. "I went from fifth assistant to first assistant within six or seven weeks."The Boston native parlayed his stint working with Rudin on seven films including "The Hours" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" into a writing career, setting up a number of projects around town including "The Leaves," based on his original comicbook, at Summit. But he soon came to the conclusion that the scribe life wasn't for him."I felt like I was putting a square peg in a round hole trying to be a writer," says Walsh. "I've discovered in the past three years that I'm a natural producer. The two intersect because I love to sit down with writers and figure out a story."But it took more false starts before Walsh fully committed to producing. He dabbled with the idea of helming, and landed a series of assistant director gigs working directly behind Steven Spielberg on "War of the Worlds," "Munich" and the upcoming "The Adventures of Tintin." Walsh even inadvertently nabbed a plum acting role when he attended a wedding in which helmer Paul Thomas Anderson officiated as minister. Anderson liked Walsh's retro looks and cast him in his upcoming period drama "The Master."When Nat Faxon and Jim Rash's hot screenplay "The Way, Way Back" came due a year ago, Walsh pounced. The coming-of-age dramedy, which was set up at Mandate Pictures with Principato-Young and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps producing, attracted a number of big-name actors and directors including Levy, Tom Bezucha and Alexander Payne. Walsh persuaded Groundlings alums Faxon and Rash, who also penned Payne's "The Descendants," to direct. The producer is now in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal to star.Walsh also is producing the political action-thriller "Patriot Down" at New Regency. CAA is out to Tom Hanks to star in the pic that kicks off when Air Force One gets shot down over Pakistan and the president finds himself on the run.Walsh rounds out his upcoming producing slate with the revenge thriller "The Gringo," with James McTeigue directing, and "King Dom," penned by "The Break-Up" scribe Jay Lavender."All of the other career incarnations helps make me a better producer," Walsh says. 10 PRODUCERS TO WATCH 2011Jason Michael Berman | Borderline Films | Tyler Davidson & Sophia Lin | James Gay-Rees | Lawrence Inglee | Red Granite Pictures | Laura Rister | Jonathan Schwartz | Diarmid Scrimshaw | Kevin Walsh Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

CEA stirs rhetoric on anti-piracy bills

The lobbying effort over a major piece of anti-piracy legislation has entered a new but not unexpected phase in Washington: As opponents sound alarms, supporters call it hyperbole. What seems to have escalated the rhetoric is a lobbying effort being mounted by the Consumer Electronics Assn. against the bill, which was introduced in the House last week and cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in an unanimous vote in May. Gary Shapiro, prexy of the CEA, wrote a Forbes column last week in which he said that the legislation is so "broadly written" that, "in theory, it would allow any copyright owner to shut down a legitimate retail website, such as Amazon or Best Buy, by alleging that one product being sold on the site could 'enable or facilitate' an infringement." He added that it would stifle innovation, as it would bestow "power on old-guard media companies with a business interest in slowing the digital revolution." The org brought 15 venture capitalists to Capitol Hill on Oct. 27 to urge lawmakers against the bill. But on Tuesday, the MPAA posted a blog entry pointing out that such predictions that the legislation will "break the Internet" have been made before, only to not pan out, including after the Supreme Court's 2005 MGM vs. Grokster decision, which held that those who market and distribute devices used for infringing activities could be held liable for inducing copyright theft. At the time, Shapiro predicted a flood of litigation and said, "Who knows how many innovative products and services face a premature death as a result of this ruling?" "Neither of these bills do the horrible things that have been suggested," said Michael O'Leary, the MPAA's senior exec VP, global policy and external affairs. "The idea that the Internet will be broken, or that innovation will die are not constructive elements of the debate This is not the first time that our critics have adopted this strategy. The good thing is that the things they say are always wrong and they will be wrong on this too." The Protect IP Act in the Senate and the similar Stop Online Piracy Act in the House target the tide of foreign websites that are devoted to the sale of infringing goods. JMuch of the focus has been on what the obligations will be of Internet providers, search engines, payment processors and ad networks will be to cut off support to sites that traffic in pirated material like movies, TV shows and music. For example, the House version of the bill requires Internet providers and search engines to to "reasonable measures" as "expeditiously as possible" to prevent users from accessing the "rogue" sites -- like blocking access to the site's IP address or disabling a hyperlink text. In the House version, "expeditiously as possible" is defined as taking action within 5 days of being served a copy of a court order. Meanwhile, the MPAA and other orgs championed a report from the Intl. Intellectual Property Alliance showing that copyright industries made up 6.4% of the total GDP, and that they grew at an annual rate of 1.10% over the past three years, outpacing the rest of the economy. Industry lobbyists also are awaiting Google's written responses to questions, due on Friday, related to its copyright practices raised at the time of Eric Schmidt's appearance before an antitrust subcommittee hearing in September. Google is a member of the NetCoalition that opposes the anti-piracy legislation. Contact Ted Johnson at ted.johnson@variety.com
